New Paltz duo, Millbrook sophomore win titles

The New Paltz doubles team of Noah Kalus and Issac Cheruiyot, along with Millbrook sophomore Dan Feigelson captured Mid-Hudson Athletic League boys tennis championships.

In the rain-altered, three-day tournament at Bard College, Kalus and Cheruiyot swept Roosevelt’s team of Naveen Chowdhury and Cory Gallinger, 7-5, 6-1 in the final. The Huguenots’ tandem advanced to the final with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Red Hook’s Colin Sullivan and Ethan Husted, while Chowdhury and Gallinger swept Rhinebeck’s Jed Hammond and Jamie Derbyshire, 6-0, 7-6 (2) in the other semifinal.

Sullivan and Husted outlasted Hammond and Derbyshire, 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3 in the consolation final.

Feigelson, second twice as seventh and eighth grader, swept Spackenkill’s Ryan Ackert, 6-0, 6-0 after defeating Ellenville’s Zach Bonitz, 6-3, 6-4 in one semifinal. Ackert reached the final with a 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 victory over Onteora’s Caleb McMenemy.

In the consolation final, McMenemy swept Bonitz, 6-4, 6-1.

The tournament was orginally scheduled for last Saturday (early rounds) and Monday (semifinals, finals) before rain pushed the schedule to Monday and Tuesday. After completing the early rounds on Monday, weather again postponed the semis and finals on Tuesday.

Doubles competition was completed on Wednesday, with the singles final finishing on Thursday.

All players reaching the quarterfinals earned berths in the Section 9 tournament, scheduled for Wednesday (early rounds) and Thursday (semifinals, finals) at Match Point Tennis in Goshen.
