Kingston man arrested after police chase
A Kingston man was arrested after leading police on a chase through Kingston and two towns.
SAUGERTIES, N.Y. » A Kingston man who led police on a chase through the city and two towns has been charged with a number of felonies and misdemeanors, including drug charges, drunken driving and fleeing police.
James E. Eberlein, 34, of Kingston, was arrested at about 11:50 p.m. Saturday and charged by the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office with the felonies of possession of a controlled substance, aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle; the misdemeanors of aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, reckless driving, unlawful fleeing of a police officer, driving while intoxicated and resisting arrest; the violation of unlawful possession of marijuana and numerous vehicle-and-traffic infractions.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, Eberlein was stopped on Broadway by an officer who knew Eberlein had a revoked license. After initially pulling over for police, Eberlein pulled away from the stop and led deputies and others on a chase through the city, town of Ulster and town of Saugerties, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Eberlein eventually stopped in the village of Saugerties and fled into a wooded area, authorities said. Eberlein was captured after a foot chase and taken into custody by a Sheriff’s K9 deputy.
A search of Eberlein’s vehicle revealed 10 grams of cocaine and approximately 15 grams of marijuana.
Eberlein was treated for the injuries he sustained in the apprehension and sent to the Ulster County Jail in lieu $20,000 cash bail.
