FDR boys, New Paltz girls lead MHAL meet

Roosevelt High boys, New Paltz girls in front at MHAL championship meet with one event remaining.

Rondout Valley and Roosevelt High were the leaders with one even remaining in the weather-plagued Mid-Hudson Athletic League track and field championships.

With only the pole vault remaining to be contested on Tuesday, the Ganders led New Paltz 127.5-110 in the girls standings, while the host Presidents held a commanding 171-128 lead over the Huguenots in the boys standings.

Roosevelt’s Sarah Trainor captured three individual events and was part of the winning 3,200-meter relay team. Trainor placed first in the 1,500 (5:17), 3,000 (10:59.94) and steeplechase (7:51.39), while teaming with Nadia Cathcart, Lindsay Holland and Alexis Nordmann to win the relay in 10:35.3.

The Ganders’ Medina Walters was the only other multiple individual winner for the girls, capturing the 100 (12.97) and 200 (27.63) sprints. Rondout teammate Olivia Avello won the long jump with a leap of 15-11.5, while the Ganders’ 400 relay team of Erin Weimann, Deandra Williams, Brianna Kruchowy, Lyric Coleman was victorious in 53.88.

Roosevelt’s Paul Sandford and Liam Farrell were the lone individual winners for the boys, with Sandford winning the 800 and 1,600 and Farrell capturing the 3,200 and steeplechase. New Paltz’s Javaughn Gooden, meanwhile, won three events in capturing the 400 hurdles and being part of the Huguenots’ winning 400 and 1,600 relay teams. BOYS Team standings: 1. F.D.
