Red Sox DFA Ramirez

The Boston Red Sox designated Hanley Ramirez for assignment on Friday to make room for Dustin Pedroia on the 25-man roster as he returns from the disabled list.

The 34-year-old Ramirez was hitting .254 with six homers and 29 RBIs in 44 games this season while splitting his time between first base and designated hitter. Ramirez had been with the Red Sox since 2015 after signing a four-year, $88 million contract as a free agent.

During his four seasons with the Red Sox, Ramirez batted .260 with 78 homers and 255 RBIs. By designating Ramirez for assignment, the Red Sox clear the way for Pedroia to make his 2018 debut. The 34-year-old Pedroia has spent all season on the disabled list after undergoing surgery on his left knee in October.

Bills WR Jones has knee surgery

Buffalo Bills receiver Zay Jones has had knee surgery that will prevent him from participating in the team’s series of spring practices.

Coach Sean McDermott wouldn’t discuss the nature of the injury or which knee was operated on in providing the update Thursday, when the Bills closed a three-day voluntary minicamp. He also didn’t have a timetable for when Jones could resume practicing, but said he’s not concerned about the rehab process extending into the season.

McDermott said the injury had been bothering Jones for some time, and the team and player decided to have surgery as soon as possible.

It’s the second operation for Jones, who had surgery in January to repair a shoulder injury.

All-NBA teams announced

LeBron James was unanimously selected to the AllNBA first team for a record 12th time, while Houston’s James Harden also appeared on all 100 first-team ballots.

They were joined Thursday on the first team by New Orleans’ Anthony Davis, Golden State’s Kevin Durant and Portland’s Damian Lillard.

James passed Kobe Bryant and Karl Malone with the 12th first-team selection of his 15year career. He also was a second-team selection twice.

The second team was forwards Giannis Antetokounmpo of Milwaukee and LaMarcus Aldridge of San Antonio, Philadelphia center Joel Embiid, and guards Russell Westbrook of Oklahoma City and DeMar DeRozan of Toronto.
