Kingston earns 3rd sectional title in row
Tigers earn 13th victory in a row, beating Warwick, 10-5, in Section 9 championship
Make it three straight Section 9 baseball championships for Kingston High.
Fritz Genther and Jon Kivlan belted back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to give the Tigers the lead, and Kingston never looked back en route to winning its 13th straight game, defeating Warwick 10-5 in Saturday’s Class AA title game at Cantine Field.
The (16-5) Tigers advanced to a regional contest against Clarkstown South 7 p.m. Thursday at Pace University.
Kingston struck first in the first, with Jake McNutt smacking a 2-run double, scoring Thomas Restivo and Genther to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead. Brody Ryan’s RBI single, followed by James Pinelli’s 2-run double put the Wildcats up 3-2 in the third.
Genther and Kivlan’s blasts, as well as Restivo’s basesclearing double, highlighted a six-run frame where the Tigers batted around to take an 8-3 lead. Joe Ferrer’s 2-run single in the sixth pushed the lead to 10-3 before Warwick scored twice in the top of the seventh.
Kingston advanced to Sat-
urday’s final by defeating Monroe-Woodbury 6-0. Joe Ferrer tossed a 70-pitch nohitter in the win. He added an RBI single and got help from Jon Kivlan (two-run single) and Garrett Warnecke (RBI single). The other two runs scored on a bases-loaded hit batsman and walk.
Warwick stunned topseed Pine Bush 7-0 in the other AA semifinal.
