Marlboro, Pine Plains win Section 9 crowns

Marlboro High and Pine Plains punched their tickets to the state baseball regionals by earning victories in Saturday’s Section 9 championships.
The Dukes won their second title in three years with a 3-1 victory over Chester in the Class B final, while the Bombers captured their third straight Class C crown with a 9-0 triumph over Tri-Valley. Class B Marlboro 3, Chester 1
At Cantine Field, Fred Callo tossed a two-hit masterpiece, with eight strikeouts, as the Dukes advanced to regional play, where they will face Section 1 champion Pleasantville 1 p.m. Thursday at Cantine.
Top-seeded Marlboro (19-1) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Eric Grzechowski drove in Trent Taylor with a single. The Dukes added a pair of runs in the third when Brendan Mahusky drove in a run on a groundout, with the second run scoring on an error.
Chester scored its lone run in the fourth, when Johnny Hipsman led off the inning with a triple before scoring on a Sean Murphy groundout. Losing pitcher T.J. Gregory, meanwhile,
tossed a two-hitter with six strikeouts.
The Dukes reached the final with a walkoff 3-2 victory in the semifinals. They opened sectional play with a 14-0 rout of James I. O’Neill. Class C Pine Plains 9, Tri-Valley 0
At Lorenz Field, Matt Funk dominated on the
mound and helped himself with an RBI for the Bombers, who opens regional play against Section 1 champion Tuckahoe 4 p.m. Thursday at Pace University.
Evan Proper and Ethan Generelli hit two-run singles in the bottom of the first to give Pine Plains a quick 4-0 lead. Back-toback-toback RBI doubles
from Adam Funk, Derek Koch and Matt Funk in the fourth pushed the lead to 7-0 before the Bombers capped the win by scoring two runs in the fifth on an error and Adam Funk’s sacrifice fly.
Pine Plains advanced to Saturday’s title game with a 10-0 victory in the semifinals.
