Rondout girls capture Section 9, Class C title

Rondout Valley High’s girls led a big day for area athletes Friday at the Section 9 Class C and D championsh­ips at Faller Field as the Ganders captured the team title.

Rondout topped Onteora 191.5-176 for the Class C crown.

The Ganders had four individual champions, led by Jennifer Callan, who swept the 1500- and 3000-meter distance races. Lyric Coleman won the long jump, Paige Bogart took the pentathlon and Medina Walters was first in the 100 dash and second in the 200 to help lead the Ganders.

Corey Chun won the pole vault for Onteora, which also received top performanc­es from Clara FloresRein­einger (first in the 2000 steeplecha­se, second in the 1500 and 3000), Lucci Robertson (first in the 800, second in the high jump), Halle King (first in the high jump, second in the triple jump) and Brooklyn Zeh (second in both the 400 hurdles and 800).

Junior thrower Kaitlyn Conte had a perfect day for Marlboro, winning four events — discus, shot put, plus the non-scoring javelin and hammer.

Rondout’s Riley Tompkins had a double-double. He won both hurdles races and was second in the high and triple jumps.

Pine Plains’s girls were second and the boys third in Class D. Lion Vega, Christian Aldana, Bryce Stracher and Kyle Stracher won the 400 relay, equaling the school record of 44.55 seconds.

Melissa Leach won the shot and discus and Tessa Kilmer took the 100 hurdles and was runner-up in both the high jump and 400 hurdles for the Bombers.

Rhinebeck’s girls had a pair of Class C champions in Stephanie Cassens (400) and Juliet Murray (400 hurdles).

Ellenville had champs in Max Rodriguez (pentathlon) and Acinel, who took the triple jump and was second in the long jump.

Other local titlists were Highland’s Jake Tomanocy (400) and Onteora’s Satch Waldman, who won the 3000 steeplecha­se and placed second in the 3200.

The teams vie for state berths next weekend as the qualifying meet will be held Thursday at Roosevelt and Friday at Middletown.
