Two hurt in boat collision with docked tugboat on creek
KINGSTON, N.Y. » A man and woman were hospitalized with non-life threatening head injuries after their boat struck a tugboat docked at the Feeney Shipyard on the Rondout Creek and partially sank, according to Kingston Fire Department Deputy Chief Wayne Platte.
Platte said firefighters, along with the department’s fire boat, were called to the Feeney Shipyard at 614 Abeel St. at 9:08 p.m. Saturday, and found that a pleasure boat had struck the rear of the docked tugboat, compromising the pleasure craft’s hull and causing all but the bow to sink.
Platte said firefighters discovered the man and woman, who he did not identify, were picked up by another boat prior to rescue personnel reaching the scene.
The fire boat made contact with the other vessel and took the victims to shore, where they were taken by ambulance to HealthAlliance Hospital’s Broadway Campus, Platte said. Firefighters later towed the boat to shallow water to get it out of the shipping channel.
“It’s going to be up to owner of boat to have it removed from the creek,” Platte said.
Platte noted collisions between vessels on the Rondout Creek are rare, and he couldn’t recall the last time there was an incident of this nature on the creek.
City police said the crash remains under investigation and declined to provide further details.
