Police probe possible assault after man injured
The investigation into the Monday night incident is at 'a really crucial spot,' a detective sergeant says.
KINGTON, N.Y. » Police are investigating the possible assault of a city man near the Cake Box Bakery and Cafe on Fair Street, Detective Sgt. Brian Robertson said Wednesday.
Robertson confirmed information provided to the Freeman that the injured man is Steven Augustine, but he said he could not give further details because the investigation is at “a really crucial spot.”
Earlier Wednesday, Kingston Police Chief Egidio Tinti said investigators were looking into an incident that occurred near the bakery late Monday.
According to the city police blotter, officers provided “medical transport” to a person from near the Cake Box, 8 Fair St., at 11:17 p.m. Monday.
A post on Facebook by Charlene Long, who wrote that she knows Augustine, states he was “the victim of a brutal beating” and suffered two skull fractures, a brain bleed and other injuries. Long said Augustine was “in critical condition and was placed in an induced coma.”
Robertson declined to confirm any of the information posted on Facebook. In her post, Long said Augustine was last seen leaving a gas station on Henry Street — presumably the one at the corner of Henry and Broadway — and she asked residents of Henry and Cedar streets and Greenkill Avenue to contact police if they saw anything.
“He is a father, a son and a friend to many! We need answers,” Long wrote.
Augustine’s sister, Tiffany Augustine, wrote on Facebook: “My baby brother I love u so very much fight babyboy fight we r fightin w u . ... if some1 knows something say something my family is goin threw pure hell right now.”
A GoFundMe page for Steven Augustine’s medical expenses was posted Wednesday with a goal of raising $10,000.
