Locals nab five medals at state competition

Sarah Trainor of Roosevelt, Kingston High’s Monica Reyes and Rhinebeck’s Gideon Rothschild plus a pair of area relay teams scored medals Friday as the New York State Public High School Athletic Association track and field championships began at Cicero-North Syracuse High.

Trainor ran a personal-best 2:11 to take home fourth-place state and federation Division 1 (large school) medals in the 800-meter run.

Reyes is bringing home a sixthplace medal with a throw of 35 feet, 8. inches in the Division I shot put.

Rothschild captured a fifthplace medal in the Division 2 800 with a 1:57.18.

Also earning medals at fifth place were Rondout Valley’s girls 400 and the Rhinebeck 1600 girls relay teams. The Ganders unit of Lyric Coleman, Brianna Kruchowy, Olivia Avello and Medina Walters ran a 50.18. The Hawks’

squad of Stephanie Cassens, Elise Voorhis, Penelope Paldino and Daisy Gadsby finished in 2:05.58.

Cassens was ninth in the 400 with a 58.98.

Kingston’s Samara Herzog had a big day, setting a school record with a 12.38 for 10th in the Division 1 100 dash and running a 15.16 to take seventh and qualify for today’s finals in the 100 hurdles.

New Paltz’s Rosalind Bendell missed making the Division 2 100 hurdles by .27 seconds with her ninthplace 16.51.

Fellow Huguenot Abigail Santos took eighth in

the Division 2 discus with a 103-6 throw.

Acinel Bruce was ninth in the Division 2 triple jump with a 36-3.75 effort and was also 17th in the long jump with a 15-8.25 clearance.

Marlboro’s Kaitlyn Conte was also ninth with a 3311.75 toss in the Division 2 shot put.

Also competing Friday were Rondout’s Jennifer Callan (11th in Division 2, 23rd overall) with a 10:46.40 in the 3000, Braxxdon Dawson (13th in the 400, 52.89), Kingston’s Jack McDonough (14th in Division 1 discus, 111-11), David Factor of Red Hook (16th in Division 1 200, 23.69) and Keira Coulard-Smith of New Paltz (22nd in pole vault, clearing nine feet).
