Police say the larceny occurred while the owner of the Jeep Grand Cherokee was inside the building, helping his wife.

A Kingston woman has been charged with stealing a vehicle that was left running outside St. Augustine Church in this town of Lloyd hamlet, town police said Tuesday.

Michelle Cadena, 41, was arrested Monday night and charged with the felonies of grand larceny and possession of stolen property, police said.

Lloyd police Lt. James Janso said Cadena stole the vehicle, a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee, about 12:30 p.m. Monday from outside the church at 55 Main St.

Janso said the vehicle had been parked outside by an elderly man who went inside to pick up his wife, who uses a wheelchair, and that the man left the vehicle running with the air conditioning on so she would be comfortable when she got inside. When the couple returned to the parking lot, the Jeep was gone.

Cadena and the vehicle were found by officers at 8:30 p.m. Monday at a motel in the town of Ulster, police said.

She was arraigned in Lloyd Town Court and sent to the Ulster County Jail in lieu of $15,000 bail.
