Hudson Valley Renegades poised for season opener

Tampa Bay Rays’ Hudson Valley Class A short-season affiliate to begin NY-Penn League title defense, celebrate 25th season

The Hudson Valley Renegades are set to defend Class A NYPenn League title, celebrate 25th season.

The Hudson Valley Renegades, celebratin­g their 25th season, look to defend their New York-Penn League championsh­ip when they open their 2018 campaign on the road at 7:05 p.m. Friday in Aberdeen, Maryland.

The Renegades, the short-season Class A minor league affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays, also face the Ironbirds at 6:05 p.m. Saturday and at 4:05 p.m. Sunday, before heading to Brooklyn for three with the Cyclones.

Hudson Valley’s home-opener at Dutchess Stadium is at 7:05 p.m. June 21 against Vermont. The first 4,000 fans in attendance get a magnetic Renegades schedules and all fans can stay for postgame fireworks.

Other promotions on the home stand include 90s night on June 22; season kickoff BBQ on June 23; Easter egg hunt for kids and adults on June 24; and wine tumbler giveaway for the first 1,000 fans in attendance on June 25.

Blake Butera is the ‘Gades new manager, having been promoted after the Rays promoted Craig Albernaz to their Class A affiliate in Bowling Green. Albernaz led Hudson Valley to their third league championsh­ip last year.

Selected in the 35th round of the 2015 Major League Draft by the Rays. Butera played parts of two seasons as an infielder, including a week with the ‘Gades in 2016, before he retired and became a member of Albernaz’s Hudson Valley staff last year.

Jose Gonzalez replaces Brian Reith as pitching coach, while Ale-

jandro Freire returns as hitting coach.

There are promotions for nearly every home game, including Fireworks on July 5, 6, 13, 20, Aug. 17, Aug. 24.
