KINGSTON, N.Y. » A homeless Kingston man was sentenced Wednesday to 15 years in state prison for burglarizing a Florence Street home in October last year, according to the Ulster County District Attorney’s Office.

Edward McCoy, 21, was sentenced by Ulster County Judge Donald A. Williams in connection with the Oct. 23, 2017, burglary.

McCoy was convicted of felony burglary on April 18, the District Attorney’s Office said. He initially also was charged with criminal possession of stolen property, a misdemeanor.

About 7 a.m. Oct. 23, the DA’s office said, a an and woman left the Florence Street home to drop off two daughters at school and then continued on to their respective jobs. A fifth member of the family, a college student, remained at home.

After the four left, the eldest daughter heard noises in the house and texted her mother asking if she had returned, the prosecutor’s office said. The office said the mother responded by texting, “It’s probably the cats making the noise.”

A short time later, according to the District Attorney’s Office, McCoy walked into the daughter’s bedroom, at which point she yelled and he ran from the house. The daughter was able to photograph him running off, which helped police identify him.

Kingston police arrested McCoy a couple of blocks away. He was in possession of jewelry stolen from the house, the District Attorney’s Office said.
