Village’s planned sidewalk project clears state hurdle
SAUGERTIES, N.Y. » The state Department of Transportation apparently is near approving a plan for the repair of bluestone sidewalks in the village, and the project is expected to move to the bidding process soon.
The Village Board on Monday authorized the solicitation of bids after being told concerns by the state about certain aspects of the project had been resolved.
“All of the corrections and an updated budget have been submitted” to the department for approval, village Special Projects Coordinator Alex Wade said in a written statement. “I understand that the documents are ready to go to bid .... ”
The project is to cover 861 feet of sidewalk — 294 feet in on the east side of Partition Street and 467 feet on the east side of Main Street — and cost an estimated $279,000, with 80 percent covered by federal funds.
“It’s been about three years that we actually got the money,” said village Mayor Bill Murphy. “This is actually money left over from Streetscape .... ”
The village Streetscape project was announced in 2003, and $960,000 in federal money was allocated for it. The project, concluded in 2010, included the installation of about 60 period streetlights, as well as new crosswalks, in the village business district.
The village received approval in 2016 to use leftover Streetscape money for the sidewalk project, but the process was slowed by state concerns about issues such as the slope of the sidewalk, tripping hazards, and compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act requirements.
