City reminds drivers about Saturday parking rules
The city is issuing warning notices to drivers who fail to pay for parking in metered spaces on Saturday, but it will not immediately start ticketing violators, according to a City Hall spokeswoman.
The City Code mandates fees to park in on-street spaces and municipal lots in the city’s three business districts — Uptown, Midtown and Downtown — from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, but tickets generally have not been issued to violators on Saturdays.
Last Saturday, June 30, some drivers who parked in pay spaces, but didn’t feed the meters or pay stations, found 8-by-11-inch orange notices on their windshields with the heading “Parking Payment Options Reminder,” followed by a six-point explanation of the city’s parking rules.
“This is not a parking ticket,” the notices read, in part. “However, you are at risk of being issued a parking violation and fine.”
“Staff gave out reminder notices ... to vehicles parked throughout the city whose parking time was expired,” Megan Weiss-Rowe, the city’s director of communications and community engagement, said in an email Friday. “Staff will be sporadically giving out these notices on some Saturdays to remind vehicle owners that parking meters and off-street pay stations are in effect Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., as is set in City code.”
Weiss-Rowe said Saturday ticketing is a possibility.
“The city is currently working to educate users on the parking rules and options but may issue parking violations in the future,” she wrote.
Parking in metered spaces is free on Sundays and holidays, as well as between 6 p.m. and 9 a.m. every day.
