Area quartet selected to state All-Star squad
Kingston, Saugerties, Marlboro standouts selected to NYSSCOGS All-Star squads
A quartet of area underclassmen, including two from Kingston High, were named state baseball All-Stars.
KINGSTON, N.Y. » A quartet of area underclassmen, including two from Kingston High, have been selected as New York State Sportswriters and Coaches Organization for Girls Sports’ state baseball AllStars.
The Tigers’ Fritz Genther and Joe Ferrer, Saugerties’ Ty Gallagher and Sam Mongelli of Marlboro were all chosen.
Genther, the Freeman’s Player of the Year, was named to the Class AA second team and Ferrer, the Freeman’s Pitcher of the Year, made the third team. Both were juniors.
Gallagher was placed on the Class A fifth team and Mongelli made the Class B third squad. Both were sophomores and firstteam Freeman All-Stars.
Genther led Kingston in batting (.391), runs (26), doubles (six) and on-base percentage (.552) and tied for the team high in hits (25) and home runs (five).
Ferrer ended the season with a 38-inning scoreless streak that
cludes four shutouts. One of those was a no-hitter of Monroe-Woodbury in the Section 9, Class AA semifinals. He was 6-2 overall with two saves and a 0.67 earned run average for a Tiger team that won the section title for a third straight year.
Gallagher a first hit .419 with 30 RBI, nine doubles, four homers, 23 runs and a .542 on-base percentage for a Sawyer team that reached the sectional finals.
Mongelli batted .516 and had a 1.067 slugging average for the Dukes with 32 RBI, ten doubles, four triples, four homes and 16 stolen bases. He also registered four wins and posted a 1.88 ERA.
