Gill, Blake, Morrison net Ulster County crowns

Karen Gill, Bill Blake and James Morrison earned title wins at the Ulster County Tennis Tournament.

Karen Gill completed a championship trifecta and Bill Blake and James Morrison also scored title wins as the Ulster County Tennis Tournament concluded Sunday with singles play.

Because of intermittent rain, the finals were moved from Forsythe Park to Hudson Valley Indoor Tennis.

Karen, who won doubles and mixed doubles titles last week, defended her open women’s crown with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Nok North. Gill dropped only three games in winning three matches en route to the title.

Blake knocked off two-time defending champion Shawn Holzmann 6-3, 7-6 (5) for the open men’s title. Holzmann had to rally to beat Blake 5-7, 6-3, 7-5 in last year’s finals.

Blake reached this year’s title match with a tight 7-6 (6), 7-5 semifinal win over Ravi Ramaswami.

Morrison defeated TN Thompson 6-0, 6-2 to win the men’s senior singles championship.

That tourney had plenty of action. Thompson upended topseeded Richard Juman 4-6, 6-4,

14-12 in a third-set super tiebreak in the semifinals. Mike Hale ousted No. 2 Jay Han in a super tiebreak 3-6. 6-4, 11-9 in the quarterfinals. Morrison beat Hale 6-4, 6-0 in the quarterfinals.
