CORNELIUS, N.C. » A much-loved husband, father, grandfathe­r, great-grandfathe­r and friend, John Carpino, Sr., 80, of Cornelius, N.C., passed away at his home July 23, 2018. He had bravely fought Parkinson’s.

John was born Jan. 6, 1938 in Kingston, N.Y., to Charles and Rose (Spada) Carpino of Glasco, N.Y. He graduated from Saugerties High School in 1956. He married his high school sweetheart, Evva Marie (Turco) on Sept. 10, 1960. John worked at and retired from Internatio­nal Business Machines (IBM) in both Kingston, N.Y., and Poughkeeps­ie, N.Y., after 38 years as a Production Control Specialist and Program Administra­tor. He also served proudly two years of active duty in the U.S. Army from 1961-63 during the Cuban Missile Crisis and four years reserve duty in the Army Reserves from 1963-67.

John was very active in his community of Glasco, N.Y., where he resided for 62 years. He became a volunteer firefighte­r for the Glasco Fire Department when he was 17 and served for 44 years, including four as Assistant Chief. John was also instrument­al in the developmen­t of the Glasco Little League Baseball program, where he served as a coach for eight years and president of the league for 12 years. He was also the Cub Scout represen- tative for the Glasco Fire Company. John retired to Coral Springs, Fla., in 2000, where he served as president of the Harbor Island Home Owners Associatio­n for five years. He also served on the Board of Directors for the Hillsboro Cove Home Owners Associatio­n in Deerfield Beach, Fla. John was a member of the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Glasco, NY, where he was an altar boy, and a member of the Holy Name Society. He enjoyed fishing, playing tennis, bowling, and travelling with his family. John was grateful to be able to travel the world with his beloved wife, enjoying many cruises with family and friends. He also enjoyed attending all of the various sporting events that his grandchild­ren participat­ed in and was one of their biggest fans.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Evva Carpino of Cornelius, N.C.; son, John Carpino, Jr., and wife, Regina of Norman Park, Ga; son, Michael Carpino and wife, Suzanne of Huntersvil­le, N.C.; grandsons, Christophe­r Carpino of Cornelius, N.C.; Evan Carpino of Norman Park, Ga.; Bill Strange of Largo, Fla.; triplets, Anthony, Michael, and Ryan Carpino of Huntersvil­le, N.C.; great-grandchild­ren, Jordan and Jadyn Strange of Pinellas Park, Fla.; brotherin-law, of Michael and Joanne Petramale of Saugerties, N.Y., Thomas Turco of Kingston, N.Y., and Albert Hrdlicka of Saugerties, N.Y.; and many dear nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Rose (Spada) Carpino; sister, Marlene (Carpino) Hrdlicka; sister-in-law, Patricia Turco and mother-inlaw, Adeline (Marino) Turco.

A Graveside service will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, July 31, 2018, at the Historic Salisbury National Cemetery, 501 Statesvill­e Blvd., Salisbury, N.C., with Army Military Honors. Family and friends are welcome to attend.

A Memorial Mass will be held in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Glasco, N.Y., at a date to be announced.
