KINGSTON, N.Y. » Antonio Delgado, the Democrat running for New York’s 19th Congressional District seat, was one of 81 Democratic candidates endorsed Wednesday by former President Barack Obama.

“Today I’m proud to endorse such a wide and impressive array of Democratic candidates — leaders as diverse, patriotic and big-hearted as the America they’re running to represent,” Obama said on Twitter. “I’m confident that, together, they’ll strengthen this country we love by restoring opportunity, repairing our alliances and standing in the world, and upholding our fundamental commitment to justice, fairness, responsibility and the rule of law. But first, they need our votes.”

Delgado, of Rhinebeck, is seeking to unseat firstterm U.S. Rep. John Faso, R-Kinderhook, in the Nov. 6 election. Delgado and Anna Kaplan, a Democrat running for state Senate in New York’s Seventh District, were the only New York candidates endorsed by Obama.

“I am honored and truly humbled to receive former President Obama’s endorsement,” Delgado said in a prepared statement. “The values he has dedicated his life to promoting — commitment to service, hard work, and ensuring equal rights for everyone — are the same values I am committed to promoting for the people of our region.”

The 19th Congressional District comprises all of Ulster, Greene, Columbia, Sullivan, Delaware, Schoharie and Otsego counties; most of Dutchess County; parts of Rensselaer and Montgomery counties; and a small section of Broome County.

Also challenging Faso are Green Party candidate Steve Greenfield of New Paltz, Libertarian Party candidate Victoria Alexander of Dutchess County, and independent candidates Dal LaMagna of Clinton, Diane Neal of Hurley, and Luisa Parker of Callicoon.
