PALENVILLE » Irene H. Miller, of Palenville, N.Y., passed away unexpectedly at Albany Medical Center on July 6, 2018.

Irene was born in Shamokin, Pa., on Sept. 18, 1932, the middle child of Theodore and Helen (Polinka) Horoshak. She graduated from Temple University with a degree in nursing, but quickly switched her career to journalism. She worked in New York City for many years at Medical World News, where she met Jerome (Jerry) Miller, a photographer whom she married in 1979.

Irene and her husband bought and lovingly restored an old captains home in Brooklyn where they lived for many years. They moved to upstate New York after retirement where she was a long-time activist for Clean Elections, an organization dedicated to the public funding of political campaigns. Most recently she crusaded for Move to Amend, advocating that human beings, not corporations have constitutional rights. She was an active member of the community, and truly tried to make this a better world.

Irene was an independent, passionate person who loved playing the piano, the theater, and opera. She enjoyed reading, and belonged to two book clubs. She was an excellent cook. In her later years, she spent winters in Costa Rica, where she enjoyed the weather and culture. She had many friends, and a family that will miss her.

Her husband, Jerry, passed away in 2011, but Irene’s sister-in-law, Doris Horn, remains. Her younger sister, Hannah, and brother-in-law, James Nash, survive her along with their children, Laura, James, Dawn, and Daniel. Irene’s older brother, Stephen Horoshak, predeceased her, but her sisterin-law, Florence, remains along with their children, Yvonn, Vivian, Jeffrey, and Jason.

Friends and family are invited to a memorial gettogether on Sunday, Aug. 26, 2018, from 2 to 4:30 p.m. at Irene’s house.

Arrangements are under the care of the Singleton Sullivan Potter Funeral Home and online condolences may be sent by using our website sbfuneralhome.com.
