Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corp.’s Board of Directors has promoted Senior Vice President Charles A. Freni to the position of president and chief executive officer, the utility announced Friday.

Freni will start in his new position on Sept. 15, succeeding Michael L. Mosher, who has been appointed president and CEO of FortisAlberta in western Canada.

Central Hudson and FortisAlberta are both part of Newfoundland-based Fortis Inc.

Freni has more than three decades of experience at Central Hudson and currently serves as its senior vice president of customer services, transmission and distribution operations, according to the company. He is responsible for day-to-day operations, including gas and electric transmission and distribution, construction and maintenance, meter reading, and account services. He also oversees the company’s energy-efficiency and “smart grid” programs.

Freni previously was Central Hudson’s senior vice president of customer services, as well as its vice president of engineering and environmental affairs.

He lives in Rhinebeck with his wife, Liz.

Mosher has been Central Hudson president and CEO since 2016.

Central Hudson is based in Poughkeepsie and serves about 300,000 customers in all or part of eight MidHudson counties: Ulster, Dutchess, Greene, Columbia, Orange, Sullivan, Putnam and Albany.
