Sail times adjusted for 17th century vessel

- Freeman staff

Currents in the Rondout Creek have forced the Kalmar Nyckel to adjust sail times while visiting the waterfront area.

Currents in the Rondout Creek have forced the Kalmar Nyckel, a 141-foot reproduction of a 17th century Swedish explorer’s ship, to adjust their sail times while visiting the Kingston waterfront.

The ship will be docked at the waterfront through Aug. 12, offering sails and deck tours most days. Deck tours will be offered today from 2 to 6 p.m.

The deck tour costs $10 for adults, and $5 for people 16 and younger. The lecture is $10 for general admission, and $5 for members of the Hudson River Maritime Museum. Tickets for the deck tours can be purchased in person at the time of the tour, while tickets for the lecture can be purchased online at www. hrmm.org/kalmar-nyckel.

The Kalmar Nyckel will also be offering guests the opportunity to sail on board while it is in Kingston. Visitors are invited to haul lines, set sails and enjoy tales of the original Kalmar Nyckel, or become a “pirate” with the crew on special pirate sails.

Day sails aboard the Kalmar Nyckel will take place from 9:30 a.m. to noon and 3:30 to 6 p.m. on Monday; 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 5:30 to 8 p.m. on Thursday; 1 to 3:30 p.m. on Friday; 2 to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 11; and 9 to 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 12. The day sails cost $60 for adults and $40 for people 16 and younger.

Pirate sails will take place from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Sunday; 9:30 to 11 a.m. Friday; and 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 11. The cost is $40 for adults and $25 for people 16 and younger.

Sail tickets can be purchased online at http://kalmarnyckel.org.
