Frederick H. Brechter Jr., 94, of Port Ewen

PORT EWEN » Frederick H. Brechter Jr., 94, of Port Ewen, N.Y., passed away Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2018, at Ten Broeck Commons in Lake Katrine.

He was born Nov. 19, 1923, in Philadelphia, Pa., to the late Frederick H. Brechter Sr., and Louella (Frye) Brechter. He married his loving wife, Edith (Hinman) Brechter, on Feb. 12, 1949.

After graduating from Ridgefield Park High School in New Jersey, Fred enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he served in the European Theater of Operations during World War II. He later worked for General Motors in New York City for 32 years as the department manager for Marine Insurance.

After retiring, he moved with his wife to the Oneonta area, where he worked for Hartwick College as its maintenance supervisor. After retiring from Hartwick, they moved to Port Ewen. He enjoyed walking and fishing and had been a member of St. Remy Reformed Church and Mosaic Lodge No. 194, F&AM.

He is survived by his wife, Edith Brechter; his children, Steven Brechter and his wife Christina Madriguera of New Albany, Ohio, David Brechter and his wife Mary of Port Ewen, and Carol Brechter of Ulster Park; four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Katherine Eichorn.

Arrangements are under the care of Keyser Funeral & Cremation Service, Port Ewen, N.Y. A memorial service will take place on Saturday, Aug. 18, 2018, at 11 a.m. at St. Remy Reformed Church, 534 Main St., St. Remy. Inurnment will follow in St. Remy Rural Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Remy Reformed Church, P.O. 1022, Port Ewen, N.Y. 12466.
