AARP driver safety class takes place Sept. 8

An AARP driver safety class will take place Saturday, Sept. 8, at the Town of Ulster Senior Center, 1 Town Hall Drive.

Sign in is at 8:30 a.m., with the class is starting at 9 a.m.

The class is scheduled to run six hours, but could go longer. Successful completion of the course qualifies attendees for car insurance discounts and the reduction of points on their driver’s license.

There are no membership or age requiremen­ts. All are welcome to attend. The cost is $25 per person, $20 for AARP members with a card.

Seating is limited, and preregistr­ation is required. To register, call (845) 3397885 Mondays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Center’s wellness talks begin Sept. 17

Rhinebeck’s Center for Healthy Aging will open its fall series of wellness talks on Monday, Sept. 17, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in the cafeteria conference room of Northern Dutchess Hospital, 6511 Springbroo­k Ave.

The opening program will be “Down to the Bone: Osteoporos­is and You,” with Dr. Tanya Thompson-Badamosi, an endocrinol­ogist. Osteoporos­is and bonethinni­ng are common affliction­s of both women and men. Participan­ts will learn what causes the deteriorat­ion of bones and how they can strengthen them.

Other programs in the series are as follows:

• Oct. 19, Learn from members of Circle of Friends for the Dying about the purpose of their gatherings, and join in a gentle, open and inspiring conversati­on about death and dying.

• Nov. 19, Family caregiving. This presentati­on will focus on the wide range of issues, responsibi­lities and obstacles caregivers face throughout each stage of the caregiving experience.

• Dec. 17, Community Talent Show. Come share your talent or enjoy in those of our performers. People of all ages are welcome to either participat­e or be a part of the audience at this funfilled, year-end celebratio­n. Musicians, poets, writers, jugglers, comedians, magicians and artists of all kinds are encouraged to participat­e. Refreshmen­ts will be served.

Workshop in Medicare, Gap coverage on Aug. 23

A free workshop on Medicare and Gap coverage will take place Thursday, Aug. 23, at 6 p.m. at Tech World, 72 Broadway.

The seminar is for anyone who is aging into Medicare (turning 65 years old) or is on permanent disability for at least 24 months. This is a way to get informed, learn and understand the upcoming changes to Medicare, eligibilit­y requiremen­ts and the annual enrollment period, which allows Medicare recipients to switch plans. The program will include a question-and-answer format.

Senior groups list meeting schedules

The Saugerties Senior Citizens Club

will not have its regular meeting on Thursday, Aug. 23, because of its summer picnic, which will start at noon.

The club won’t have a meeting on Sept. 11 because the senior center will

be used for voting that day. The next scheduled meeting will take place Thursday, Sept. 27. The club will hold an election of officers at that meeting.

The club is located at 207 Market St. It meets the second and fourth Thursday of every month at 1 p.m. All seniors from the surroundin­g area are welcome to attend.
