Frederick R. Schmersahl, 90, formerly of Meadow Court in Saugerties, died Sunday, Aug. 19, 2018, at the Neighborho­od Hospice in West Chester. Born Feb. 4, 1928, in Brooklyn, he was the son of the late Richard W. and Viola Schmersahl.

A Saugerties area resident for many years, he owned and operated Wm. Schmersahl Inc. In 1955, Fred and his father relocated the business, from Brooklyn to Saugerties on Route 9W. They specialize­d in carburetor repairs and expanded to being a wholesale distributo­r for small engine parts. In 2002, he retired and closed the doors of Wm. Schmersahl Inc., which had been in business for 75 years.

Fred was an avid sportsman who met his wife skating at the Brooklyn Ice Palace. In later years, he developed a passion for long bicycle trips and cross county skiing, which he did until age 86. They spent many years at their house on Lake George, boating and sailing. He enjoyed traveling all over the world, having visited 25-plus countries. An active member of Atonement Lutheran Church, he supported Ulster County BOCES and was a member of the Steamship Historical Society.

Survivors include his wife, Vivielyn, and a daughter, Carol and her husband Scott Aldridge. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

His funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Atonement Lutheran Church on Market Street, Saugerties.
