Concert season wraps up at Maverick this weekend

Maverick Concerts concludes its 103rd season this weekend with a pair of concerts at Maverick Concert Hall, 120 Maverick Road, Woodstock.

The weekend opens Saturday, Sept. 1, at 8 p.m. with Nilson Matta’s “Brazilian Jazz Voyage.”

Matta was a 2017 Grammy nominee with Trio Da Paz’s “30.” A pioneer in the art of playing Brazilian Jazz on an acoustic bass,he has been a force in the evolution and popularity of Brazilian Jazz and considered one of the greatest bass players in the world. Downbeat called him “a powerhouse bass player.”

Nilson studied bass at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. His mastery of the instrument and unique sound has earned him a reputation as one of the industry’s most soughtafte­r players. At an incredibly young age, he as already recognized as one of Brazil’s most impressive bass players. During his years living in Brazil, he played the with luminaries such as João Gilberto, Hermeto Pascoal, João Bosco, Johnny Alf, Helio Delmiro, Luis Bonfá, Chico Buarque, MPB-4 and many others.

Since Nilson moved to New York in the 1980s he has performed and recorded with such artists as Paquito D’Rivera, Herbie Mann, Astrud Gilberto, Mark Murphy, Don Friedman, Oscar Castro Neves, Paul Winter and Claudio Roditi.

Performing with Matta will be Dario Eskenaz on piano, Jorge Continenti­no on saxophone and flute, and Marcello Pellitteri on drums.

The season ends with Trio Solisti on Sunday, Sept. 2, at 4 p.m.

Trio Solisti was founded in 2001 and features violinist Maria Bachmann, cellist Alexis Pia Gerlach and pianist Fabio Bidini. The group performs at major venues and series across the United States. The 2018-2019 season includes its return to Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall for a three-concert series. The New Yorker called Trio Solisti “the most exciting piano trio in America.” For its Maverick performanc­e, the group will perform works by Haydn, Dvorak and Chausson.
