Marlboro captures opening showdown

- Freeman staff

A big second quarter propelled Marlboro High to a season-opening 21-13 Section 9 football victory over New Paltz night, giving new Dukes coach Brian Beck his first win.

The contest was a rematch of last year’s Class B championship game. With New Paltz moved up to Class A this season, this was a non-league tussle that gave both squads a good gauge of where they stand.

New Paltz shut out the Dukes for three quarters, but a 21-point second period was all they needed.

Sam Mongelli threw for two touchdowns and Ameer

to New York late Friday night, entered as a defensive replacement to start the ninth.

Tanaka (10-5) gave up one run and seven hits for his first victory since July 31. He was 0-3 with a 4.40 ERA in five August starts.

Tanaka joined Andy Pettitte as the only pitchers in Yankees’ history to reach double-digit wins in each of their first five seasons in the majors.

Jonathan Holder pitched a scoreless eighth and Dellin Betances notched his second save in the ninth.

Torres hit his 22nd homer of the season and third since the start of New York’s homestand on Monday, a stretch over which he’s batting .526 with eight RBIs.

Torres connected in the fifth off Daniel Norris (0-3) for the Yankees’ first.

Norris, reinstated from the disabled list and making his first big league appearance since April 29, was pulled later in the inning with cramping in his left calf. He had been sidelined for most of the season with a strained left groin.

Norris fanned seven, including six of the first 10 New York batters.

The Tigers loaded the bases in the first and scored on a sacrifice fly by Victor Martinez.

Excited McCutchen

A day after being traded from San Francisco, McCutchen drew a warm ovation when he was introduced as the leadoff hitter and right fielder.

He spent his first nine seasons in Pittsburgh — the Steel City — and was traded to San Francisco in January. The five-time AllStar was hitting .255 with 15 home runs, 55 RBIs and 13 stolen bases when the Giants sent him to the Yankees.

“I feel like a lot of baseball players want to at least throw the pinstripes on for who knows how long just to say you did it,” McCutchen said.

“I’m on a new team and we have an opportunity to do big things here so in a sense, yes, I am nervous, but at the same time I look at it as a good thing because that means I care about it,” he said.

Acquired for two minor leaguers on the final day trades could be made for postseason-eligible players, McCutchen should see the lion’s share of time in right while slugger Aaron Judge continues to recover from a broken right wrist.

Judge has been on the mend since being hit by a pitch on July 26, a process that has gone slower than originally expected. New York had hoped Clint Frazier could step in for Judge at some point, but the young outfielder is still shelved with post-concussion migraines.

“We’ve been looking to reinforce this outfield situation as the timeframes on Aaron Judge and Clint Frazier were obviously much longer than anticipated,” Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said. “It’s a nice welcome addition. It’s a much-needed addition.”

Call-Ups

Both clubs made additional roster moves before the game with rosters expanding from 25 to 40.

New York recalled RHP Luis Cessa and INF Tyler Wade from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and signed lefty reliever Stephen Tarpley to a major league contract. Wade appeared as a pinch-runner in the seventh, stole a base and remained in the game. OF Shane Robinson was designated for assignment.

Detroit recalled RHP Sandy Baez from DoubleA Erie.
