Goshen deals Kingston season-opening defeat
Gladiators score 35 consecutive points en route to 41-12 win
Goshen routs Kingston to keep Tigers searching for their first opening-day victory since 2009.
GOSHEN, N.Y. » Goshen High dominated Kingston High in the first half of the teams’ Section 9 football opener Saturday, scoring 35 consecutive points en route to a 41-12 triumph.
Matt Giordano threw for 281 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 63 yards and two scores to lead the Gladiators.
Kingston, which has not won an opener since 2009, started strong as sophomore Mark Russell got stopped at the line, then broke through three tackles for a 68-yard TD run to give the Tigers a 6-0 advantage.
Goshen, however, scored on its next five possessions to take command.
The Gladiators capitalized on a fumbled lateral pass and a fumbled handoff as Giordano ran 2 yards for one score and threw an 8-yard pass to Jordan Weaver for a 14-6 lead.
Sacks by Weaver and Chris Masker led to good field position for Goshen. Rob Siracuse scored on a 2-yard run, then Giordano threw TD passes of 38 yards to
Jack Shannon and 88 to Dom Pasquini to build the
35-6 halftime edge.
Chapman Parker tossed a 57-yard TD pass to Jackson Parker for Kingston midway through the third quarter. Goshen answered with a no-huddle drive, culminated
by Giordano’s 5-yard TD run. Better pass defense from the Tigers kept the Gladiators in check the rest of the half.
Russell finished with 78 yards on seven carries and Parker had 126 yards passing
for the Tigers. Justin Longo had a solid day with his punting and kickoffs.
Kingston plays its home opener Friday, Sept. 7, at Dietz Stadium against Washingtonville.
