Tanaka, Torres lead Yanks over Tigers

NEW YORK » Masahiro Tanaka pitched seven strong innings for his first win since July, rookie Gleyber Torres hit a two-run homer and the New York Yankees beat the Detroit Tigers 2-1 Saturday.

The Yankees got only two hits, but won for the 11th time in 15 games. New York has the secondbest record in the majors, behind AL East-leading Boston.

Andrew McCutchen went 0 for 3 and struck out twice in his Yankees debut. The former NL MVP batted leadoff and played right field, a day after being acquired from San Francisco.

Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez, who missed nearly six weeks with a recurring groin injury, went 0 for 4. Shortstop Adeiny Hechavarri­a, traded from Pittsburgh

Williams ran for one to lead Marlboro.

The Dukes were held off the board late in the first quarter as defensive tackle Blaise Driscoll pressured Mongelli into a fourthdown incompleti­on at the New Paltz 10.

Marlboro linebacker Myles Barrington kept the Huguenots at bay early in the second when his stop forced New Paltz to turn the ball over on downs at the Duke 33.

Two long runs by Williams led to Marlboro’s first score. Mongelli, flushed out of the pocket, stepped into the line and tossed a 7-yard TD pass that Zack Bayon leaped up to grab over a defender at the back of the end zone.

Defensive end Teige Napoli’s sack and Mongelli’s 34-yard run set up an 8-yard TD burst by Williams for a 14-0 lead with 4:17 left in the half.

Two plays later, Jack Young’s intercepti­on set up Marlboro again as Mongelli tossed a 10-yard TD to Noah Hadley with 18 seconds remaining before intermissi­on.

New Paltz and its big defensive line stopped the Dukes in the second half. The Hugies scored twice in the fourth on two TD passes by junior Aidan Hoffman. A Mongelli fumble led to an 18-yard scoring strike to Jordan Cook and New Paltz made it 21-13 on a 12-yard hookup with Kenny Verney with 1:24 to play. The Hugies attempted an onside kick, but Marlboro recovered and ran out the clock for the win. Saugerties 26, O’Neill 14

At Highland Falls, Matt Bucci, Graeme Knisell and a solid defensive performanc­e carried Saugerties to its opening triumph.

Bucci completed 6 of 7 passes for 182 yards and two touchdowns and also ran 10 times for 83 to lead the offense. Knisell had 76 yards and a TD on just three carries and also caught a 65-yard TD from Bucci. Sean Costello, who had two catches for 69 yards, had the other TD.

End Anthony Owen had a big day for the Sawyer defense with 11 tackles, two sacks and a forced fumble. Middle linebacker Caleb Edwards also made 11 tackles, while outside lineback Coleen Staccio and tackle Craig Laurey had seven each. Highland 50, Millbrook 6

At Highland, Hezekiah Askew rushed for 107 yards on nine carries and two scores to power the Huskies.

Askew had a 13-yard rushing touchdown and added a 57-yard scoring reception, while Jake Duncan had two carries for 88 yards — scoring runs of 85 and three yards in the win. Mathew Malheiro ran three times for 15 yards and a pair of scores, while Julian Meltz had four carries for 63 yards as well as 37-yard touchdown reception.

Quarterbac­k Brian Joyce, meanwhile, completed 4 of 7 passes for 100 yards and a pair of TDs.

Josh Hanna led the defense with 10 tackles, with Chris Hammond and Duncan adding nine and six tackles, respective­ly. Woodlands 30, Ellenville 6

At Ellenville, Woodlands scored 24 unanswered points in the second half to pull away for the non-league win over the Blue Devils.

The game was tied 6-6 at the half with Donovan Decker connecting on a 6-yard touchdown pass to Noah Ghisolfi for Ellenville’s score. Burke 40, Roosevelt 0

At Hyde Park, Solomon Hemingway scored touchdowns on runs of 58, 63 and 75 yards to power John S. Burke Catholic.

Sophomore quarterbac­k Jackson Hoovler got the Eagles started with TD passes to Daniel Weslowski and Nate Pena. Rashad Hames’ long kickoff return for a score opened the second half. Valley Central 56, Wallkill 21

At Wallkill, Chandler Toth threw for five touchdowns to lead Valley Central to victory over the Panthers.

Ryan Strobach passed for two touchdowns and ran for one to lead Wallkill, which trailed 35-21 at the half.
