The New York Yankees have acquired Adeiny Hechavarria in a trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates, bringing in a veteran infielder to back up injured shortstop Didi Gregorius.

New York is sending a player to be named or cash to Pittsburgh for the 29-year-old Hechavarria, who is batting .254 with four homers and 29 RBIs in 76 games with the Rays and Pirates this season. As part of the deal, the Pirates will send New York $863,709 to cover most of the $951,613 remaining in Hechavarria’s $5.9 million salary.

The trade was completed just before Friday’s deadline for traded players to be eligible for the postseason. The Yankees are in position for the first AL wild card.

Gregorius has been out since Aug. 20 with a bruised left heel. He could come off the disabled list this weekend.

The Buffalo Bills are keeping veteran AJ McCarron, leaving them with three quarterbacks on the roster, a person with direct knowledge of the decision tells The Associated Press.

Buffalo also has released wide receiver Corey Coleman, a 2016 first-round draft pick by Cleveland whom the Bills acquired last month.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team has not officially announced the moves.

McCarron, an offseason free agent addition who was a backup in Cincinnati for four years, bruised his right throwing shoulder in an exhibition game. That hindered his pursuit of the starting job, particularly with the Bills having drafted Josh Allen with the seventh overall pick in April.

Milwaukee brought in three more veterans on Friday, the deadline for traded players to be eligible to postseason play. They snagged left-handed starter Gio Gonzalez from the Washington Nationals, steady outfielder Curtis Granderson from the Toronto Blue Jays and lefty reliever Xavier Cedeno from the Chicago White Sox.

Gonzalez and Granderson both have postseason experience. Gonzalez won four NL East titles in a six-year stretch with the Nationals, and Granderson has reached the playoffs with four teams in his career Detroit, the Yankees, the Mets and the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The 32-year-old Gonzalez, who will be a free agent after the season, has a career record of 124-97 with a 3.71 ERA in 308 games (302 starts) with Oakland and Washington. This year, he’s 7-11 with a 4.57 ERA in 27 starts.
