Movies With Spirt series opens new season Sept. 15

The Movies With Spirit film series launches its 13th season with a showing of the documentary “The Farthest,” about NASA’s Voyager mission, on Saturday, Sept. 15, at 7 p.m. at the Rondout Valley United Methodist Church, 25 Schoonmaker Lane.

Voyager was launched in 1977 to study the outer solar system. Two robotic probes, Voyager 1 and Voyager 2, launched 16 days apart — each with less computing power than a modern-day remote car-door opener — have since gone past Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. They have sendt back unprecedented images and previously unknown information that revolutionized humans’ understanding of the spectacular outer planets and their many peculiar moons.

Still going strong four decades after launch, the Voyager probes are now in interstellar space, traveling 11 miles a second. A continuously updated chart showing the probes’ distance from Earth and the sun can be seen at pbs.org/the-farthest. The Public Broadcasting Service commissioned the film.

The film’s trailer can be found on YouTube at tinyurl.com/The-FarthestDocumentary.

The 2017 movie runs 1 hour and 40 minutes and is not rated by the Motion Picture Association of America. The screening will be followed by a facilitated discussion. Refreshments will be served. Attendees over age 12 are asked to contribute $5 to $10 a person.

The monthly Movies With Spirit series, organized by Gerry Harrington of Kingston, seeks to stimulate people’s sense of joy and wonder, inspire love and compassion, evoke a deepened understanding of people’s integral connection with others and with life itself, and support individual cultures, faith paths and beliefs while simultaneously transcending them. The films are screened in diverse houses of worship and reverence across Ulster and Dutchess counties at 7 p.m. on the third Saturday of every month. The series has no religious affiliation.
