Nick Foles will start for Eagles vs. Falcons in season opener

Eagles coach Doug Pederson says Nick Foles will start against the Atlanta Falcons on Thursday night.

Pederson made the announcement on Monday, one day after a testy exchange with reporters in which he insisted he wanted to wait.

“In the best interest of everything about the football team and this decision, Nick Foles is the starter Week 1,” said Pederson, who wasn’t scheduled to speak to the media and plans to answer questions at his regular news conference on Tuesday.

Wentz still hasn’t been medically cleared for contact as he comes back from surgery last December to repair two torn ligaments in his left knee. Foles was the Super Bowl MVP in Philadelphia’s 41-33 win over New England.

Wentz didn’t play in the preseason and only recently returned to full practice.

The Indians placed Josh Donaldson on the disabled list so he can continue rehabbing a calf injury in the minor leagues.

The 2015 AL MVP was acquired on Friday in a trade with Toronto. Donaldson has been limited to just 36 games this season, and the Indians are hoping he can get healthy enough to help them in the postseason.

Donaldson is playing third base and batting second on Monday for Triple-A Columbus. Once Donaldson is cleared and ready to play for them, the Indians intend to have him at third and slide All-Star Jose Ramirez to second. Jason Kipnis will be moving to the outfield.

The 32-year-old Donaldson hasn’t played in a major league game since May 28. Donaldson took batting practice and did drills at Progressive Field on Sunday. Afterward, he said he was close to being 100 percent.

World champion swimmer Madisyn Cox has been cleared to compete again after her two-year doping ban was cut to six months.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport says it approved a settlement between Cox and FINA because tests eventually showed a vitamin supplement was contaminated.

The 23-year-old American’s six-month ban expired Sunday.

Cox won gold at the 2017 world championships in the 4x200-meter freestyle relay, and bronze in 200 individual medley.

She tested positive in February for trimetazidine while training in Austin, Texas, and could not initially prove where it came from.

The FINA doping panel said Cox was “honest, very hardworking and highly credible.” It banned her in July for two years instead of four.
