Area teams poised for Week 2 league play

Kingston home opener at Dietz highlights busy weekend of Section 9 competitio­n

League play begins for six area football teams this weekend as the season enters week 2.

Kingston takes on Washington­ville in Class AA in its home opener Friday. Also on Friday, Ellenville plays host to Red Hook in Class B and Roosevelt heads to Minisink Valley for a Class A Division 1 contest.

On Saturday, Saugerties is home to Goshen and Wallkill travels to Monticello in Class A Division 2 1:30 p.m. starts.

Non-league games have Marlboro taking on Cornwall in a big matchup 7 p.m. and New Paltz is home against John S. Burke Catholic at 6:30 p.m. Friday. Saturday has Onteora at home against Highland and Rondout at Dobbs Ferry. Washington­ville at Kingston

The Tigers yielded 35 consecutiv­e points in an opening loss to Goshen.

There were some bright spots for Kingston as it found a prime back in sophomore Matt Russell, who raced 68 yards for a touchdown. Chapman Parker threw a 57-yard TD pass to Jackson Parker in the fourth quarter. The Tiger defense settled down to hold

Goshen to six second-half points.

Vincent Martello passed for 198 yards and two TDs for the Wizards in a 24-14 loss to Minisink. Burke at New Paltz

New Paltz fought Marlboro tough in its 21-13 loss, rallying to get within a possession with 1:24 remaining, but couldn’t recover an onside kick. Junior Aidan Hoffman had two touchdown passes for the Huguenots.

Burke, which dropped down to Class B, thumped Roosevelt 40-0 in its first shutout in three years. Solomon Hemingway rushed for 210 yards and three TDs to lead the Eagles. Red Hook at Ellenville

Red Hook opened with a 40-0 win over Onteora behind the versatile Dylan Bayliss (183 yards and four TDs passing, 169 yards rushing). The Raiders now take on an Ellenville team that yielded 34 consecutiv­e second-half points after being tied 6-6 with Woodlands at the half. Marlboro at Cornwall

To give new coach Brian Beck his first victory, Marlboro had a big defensive effort and Sam Mongelli threw for two touchdowns and Ameer Williams ran for another. The Duke defense gets a big test with seven-time reigning Class A champion. Amin Woods ran for 167 yards and three touchdowns and freshman Aidan Semo tossed for 223 yards and two TDs in the Dragons’ 32-22 win over Pine Bush. Roosevelt at Minisink Valley

Roosevelt looks to bounce back from the opening loss to Burke. Ryan Johnson threw for 250 yards and three TDs and Anton Juncaj had 13 tackles and a pair of sacks for Minisink in its win over Middletown. Goshen at Saugerties

Saugerties looks to go to 2-0 after a solid 26-14 win against James I. O’Neill. Graeme Knisell ran for one touchdown and caught another for the Sawyers. Matt Bucci threw for 182 yards and two TDs. Anthony Owen keyed the defense with 11 tackles, two sacks and a forced fumble.

possession­s, capitalizi­ng on three turnovers, in that first half versus Kingston. Highland at Onteora

Highland looked really good in a 50-6 rout of Millbrook. Hezekiah Askew carrried for 107 yards and a pair of TDs to lead the Huskies.

Owen Allison (eight solo tackles, four assists, one fumble recovery) and Noah Kight (10 tackles, one assist) led Onteora in its 40-0 loss to Rondout. Rondout at Dobbs Ferry

Rondout got 263 yards from five runners and

Matt Kelly threw for two TDs in the win over Onteora. Dobbs Ferry opened its season with a 21-15 loss to Westlake. The Eagles went 7-3, including wins over Red Hook, Chester and Millbrook. Wallkill at Monticello

Monticello looks to bounce back from the loss to Red Hook as it goes against a Wallkill team that lost 56-21 to Valley Central. Ryan Strobach threw for two touchdowns and ran for another for the Panthers.
