Saugerties rallies, but falls short in defeat

Wallkill, Highland win big en route to posting shutouts

SAUGERTIES, N.Y. » Saugerties High battled back from a 34-8 deficit, but fell short Saturday, losing 40-30 to Goshen in a Section 9, Class A football game.

Matt Giordano threw for three touchdowns and ran for one to lead (2-0) Goshen. He tossed TD passes to Jake Kunis to build an early 14-0 lead.

Matt Bucci rallied the (1-1) Sawyers, passing for 388 yards and two TDs and rushing 11 times for 96 yards and a score. His 14-yard TD stroke to Jimmy Heinlein and Caleb Edwards’ conversion run drew Saugerties within 14-8.

The Sawyers were looking to even it up on their next possession, but fumbled on the Goshen 2. The Gladiators responded with a 98-yard drive, culminatin­g in Giordano’s quarterbac­k sneak. He followed with TD passes to Jordan Weaver and Jared Cassel to build the 34-8 advantage.

Bucci and Edwards each ran for a touchdown and Bucci also connected with Graeme Knisell to rally Saugerties. Knisell has 120 yards on four receptions. The Sawyers had a late TD called back by a holding penalty.

At Dobbs Ferry, Awvise Khan rushed for 134 yards and two touchdowns and middle linebacker Mike McGoey had eight tackles and a pair of sacks to lead the Section 1 Eagles to the non-league win over Rondout Valley.

“Two special teams mistakes

in the first quarter led to two quick scores,” Rondout coach Chris Frenza said, “and we never got our feet under us.”

Jack Baglieri, who injured his shoulder in the first half, had TD runs of 6- and 2-yards to put (1-1) Dobbs Ferry ahead.

Khan scored on a 3-yard run and Pat Straub threw an 11-yard scoring pass to Tevaun Holness to make it 28-0 at halftime. Straub intercepte­d Gander quarterbac­k Matt Kelly early in the second half and Khan cashed it in with his second TD run.

Austin Wells got (1-1)

Rondout on the board with a 5-yard run late in the third quarter. Tyler Tomlin ran 17 times for 71 yards for Rondout.

The game was delayed 90 minutes. Because of a sinking part of the field, the contest had to switched at the last moment to a nearby turf field. Wallkill 47, Monticello 0

At Monticello, the (1-1) Panthers won big, building a 27-0 lead in the first half on a pair of Jake Miller touchdown runs, Ryan Strobch’s TD pass to Dillon Tucker and an intercepti­on return for a score by Anthony Quattrochi.

Highland 48, Onteora 0

At Boiceville, Highland improved to 2-0 with another lopsided triumph. The Huskies beat Millbrook 50-6 last week.

Senior Mat Malheiro, junior Hezekiah Askew and sophomore Jake Duncan all ran for touchdowns for Highland.

Owen Allison completed 11 of 18 passes for 144 yards, including 9 to Noah Kight for 118, to lead Onteora.

John Strauss (eight tackles, one assist), Allison (nine tackles, two assists) and Kight (six tackles, two assists) paced the Eagles’ defense.
