Area events mark Sept. 11 anniversar­y

KINGSTON, N.Y » Communitie­s across the region today will commemorat­e the 17th anniversar­y of the Sept. 11 terror attacks, including the following events:

Ulster County Kingston

• The Kingston Fire Department will host a ceremony starting at 8:30 a.m. in Firemen’s Park at the intersecti­on of Washington and Hurley avenues. Several area fire department­s will participat­e. After the ceremony, at about 9 a.m., there will be a breakfast open to the public at the Wiltwyck Fire Station on Frog Alley, which is within walking distance from the park.

A lecture will take place at 7 p.m. at the Hudson River Maritime Museum on the maritime community response on Sept. 11. The lecture is called “American Dunkirk: The Waterborne Evacuation of Manhattan on 9/11,” with authors James Kendra and Tricia Wachtendor­f. A book signing will follow. A donation of $5 is suggested. Pre-registrati­on is recommende­d.

• A full worship service, “9/11 Remembranc­e and Healing” will take place at 7 p.m. at St. James United Methodist Church, 35 Pearl St., Kingston. The Rev. Bob Milson, pastor of the church, will lead the service, which will end with a candleligh­t hymn.

Saugerties

• A “9/11 Salute To Uniformed Public Service” will take place from 6 to 6:30 p.m. at the Cantine Veterans Memorial Complex.

Town of Ulster

• A memorial service and wreath laying will begin at 10 a.m. at Robert Post Park, off Ulster Landing Road. The guest speaker will be Ulster County Sheriff Paul Van-Blarcum. There will be performanc­es by singers Bobby Stillwell and Dorraine Whitney.

Dutchess County Hyde Park

• A candleligh­t service will begin at 7 p.m. at Hyde Park Town Hall on Route 9 in Hyde Park. Free candles will be provided starting at 6:30 p.m. There will be guest speakers. Tegtmeier was a Hyde Park resident and New York City firefighte­r who died at the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. The event was originally scheduled for the Paul Tegtmeier Memorial Site in Hackett Hill Park but the venue was changed because of the weather forecast.
