Area events mark Sept. 11 anniversary
KINGSTON, N.Y » Communities across the region today will commemorate the 17th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks, including the following events:
Ulster County Kingston
• The Kingston Fire Department will host a ceremony starting at 8:30 a.m. in Firemen’s Park at the intersection of Washington and Hurley avenues. Several area fire departments will participate. After the ceremony, at about 9 a.m., there will be a breakfast open to the public at the Wiltwyck Fire Station on Frog Alley, which is within walking distance from the park.
A lecture will take place at 7 p.m. at the Hudson River Maritime Museum on the maritime community response on Sept. 11. The lecture is called “American Dunkirk: The Waterborne Evacuation of Manhattan on 9/11,” with authors James Kendra and Tricia Wachtendorf. A book signing will follow. A donation of $5 is suggested. Pre-registration is recommended.
• A full worship service, “9/11 Remembrance and Healing” will take place at 7 p.m. at St. James United Methodist Church, 35 Pearl St., Kingston. The Rev. Bob Milson, pastor of the church, will lead the service, which will end with a candlelight hymn.
Saugerties
• A “9/11 Salute To Uniformed Public Service” will take place from 6 to 6:30 p.m. at the Cantine Veterans Memorial Complex.
Town of Ulster
• A memorial service and wreath laying will begin at 10 a.m. at Robert Post Park, off Ulster Landing Road. The guest speaker will be Ulster County Sheriff Paul Van-Blarcum. There will be performances by singers Bobby Stillwell and Dorraine Whitney.
Dutchess County Hyde Park
• A candlelight service will begin at 7 p.m. at Hyde Park Town Hall on Route 9 in Hyde Park. Free candles will be provided starting at 6:30 p.m. There will be guest speakers. Tegtmeier was a Hyde Park resident and New York City firefighter who died at the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. The event was originally scheduled for the Paul Tegtmeier Memorial Site in Hackett Hill Park but the venue was changed because of the weather forecast.
