Highland hands Red Hook first league defeat

RED HOOK, N.Y. » Tim Petty scored a pair of goals as Highland High upset Red Hook 2-1 in a Mid-Hudson Athletic League boys soccer match.

“An inspired Highland team played hard all afternoon in upsetting Red Hook,” Raiders coach Steven Sutton said. “Constant pressure in the midfield and great positionin­g by second defenders limited our ability to play the way we wanted and find the final pass to set up good shots.”

Tyler Johnson and Chris Wood each contribute­d an assist for the (2-2, 1-1) Huskies. Michy Mialma’s goal paced the (3-2, 3-1) Raiders.

Matt Morris registered for stops for Highland while Logan Scott had nine for Red Hook.

Ellenville 1, Onteora 0

At Ellenville, Brandon Gonzalez’s overtime goal helped the Devils secure a sectional berth.

Early in the overtime period, Kyle Guiney played the ball to Tim Placide to run onto it and knock it across to Gonzalez who put it in the net.

“Onteora defended well, their keeper played great, and we couldn’t finish off our chances, especially early in the game,” Ellenville coach Maxwell Mead said.

The Eagles got some momentum late but Christian Stinehour had two big saves one on a one-vs-one he kept out and the other on a deep shot to the corner that he was able to get and push wide.

Stinehour finished the evening with seven stops.

Ellenville (5-1, 4-1) led Onteora (2-3, 2-3) 15-9 in shots while both teams managed two corners.

Jake Stern registered six saves for the Eagles.

Rhinebeck 4, Millbrook 1

At Rhinebeck, the Hawks cruised past the Blazers to stay undefeated.

Nakoa Zuger scored off a Gideon Rothschild, Rothschild kicked in a feed Rothschild, Noah Lortie deposited a penalty in the net and Gage Stickle connected on a Rothschild assist to lead (40) Rhinebeck.

“It was great to see four different scorers today and a lot of contributi­on from all over the field,” Hawks coach Justin Wiesenthal said.

Dylan Madison scored Millbrook’s lone goal.

Rhinebeck outshot the Blazers 11-3 and held a 9-3 edge in corners.

Rondout 4, Marlboro 1

At Kyserike, the Ganders scored three unanswered goals in the second half to beat the Dukes.

Luis Serrano’s long blast had Marlboro ahead, but Ryder Berlin tied late in the first half for Rondout.

Brennan O’Connell put the (2-1 MHAL, 3-1 overall) Ganders ahead for good off Adam Olechowski’s assist two minutes into the second half. O’Connell set up Riley Stevens for a 3-1 advantage. Max DeCesare capped the scoring with a 30-yard blast with 19 minutes remaining.

Evan Lankhorst and Roman Hrab combined for five saves for Rondout. Marlboro goalie Jawad Haidaoui made six saves for the Dukes.

New Paltz 2. Wallkill 1

At Wallkill, Kieran Weinstein had a goal and an assist to lead the Huguenots.

Isaac Cherviyot scored a goal, while Joey Richards added an assist in the win, while Daniel Drewnowski maed three saves.

John Locicero scored on an assist from Peter Kras, while Andrew Darrow stopped eight shots for the Panthers.
