Irish center getting special treatment
Dear Editor: Re “Kingston planners give Irish center developer chance for permit extension,” by William J. Kemble, Sept. 18, 2018: The developers of the Irish Cultural Center project have shown blatant disregard for both public and private property.
Just two examples: In removing trees bordering historic Company Hill Path, erosion and stormwater runoff has been a constant problem, which the city has been left to clean up; and trespassing on the neighbor’s private property (without permission, contrary to the developer’s denials) to saw through their bluestone patio.
Beyond these examples, this project was cited by the city’s engineer in August for safety violations that have yet to be resolved.
The above actions and lack of solutions for construction problems indicate this developer needs close supervision. It is baffling that the city is offering them an opportunity to appeal the decision to consider this a new application after the Irish Cultural Center, again, let the approval expire. Precedent has been to appeal city board decisions through Article 78.
Why is the city deviating from the process clearly stated in the code? Why is the project getting special treatment? And how can the city rationalize a second chance on this permit with this kind of track record?
