Kingston nets first victory of season

KINGSTON, N.Y. » Kingston High’s girls tennis team ended a pair of long droughts Monday as it defeated Valley Central 4-3 in an Orange County Interschol­astic Athletic Associatio­n match.

It marked the Tigers’ first win of the season and their first triumph in more than a year (Sept. 19, 2017). For longtime coach Bill Constant, it was also his first victory over the Vikings.

“This is my 21st season. I had gone 0-for-20 against Valley Central,” Constant noted.

The second doubles team of Veronika Rakchev and Kassidy Ackerman rallied for a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 win over Jenna Lugo and Alanie Hew to clinch the victory.

Lila Shih Freeman and Vyda VanDenburg­h rolled to singles wins for the (1-4) Tigers. Rebecca Shaw and Vanessa Wilkins picked up a big 6-3, 6-3 win at third doubles for the team over Madison Kresge and Autumn Purcell.

Kingston has a busy week. It travels to Monroe-Woodbury on Wednesday, Sept. 26, then plays a home-and-home series with Newburgh. The Tigers are at the Goldbacks Thursday, Sept. 27, and
