- Freeman staff

GOSHEN, N.Y. >> Christian Diorio threw for one touchdown and ran for another and Marlboro High’s defense held John S. Burke Catholic in check as the Dukes won a battle of defending football champs Saturday 26-14 in a big Class B clash.

The rivals came into the game with 3-1 records. Marlboro is the reigning Section 9, Class B champion. Burke lost to the Dukes in 2014 and ‘15, then won Class C the next two years. Now the Eagles are back up in B, making this game a possible preview of next month’s title game.

Marlboro was up 14-7 in the third quarter when starting quarterback Sam Mongelli was taken out after a hard hit. Diorio responded with a 15-yard TD pass to Gio Frisenda.

Jack Hoovler’s 75-yard pass play to Louie Usera drew the Eagles within 20-14, but Marlboro kept them off the board the rest of the day. Austin Laird’s 30-yard TD

interception return with 24 seconds remaining sealed the victory.

Diorio, who ran for 101 yards, had a 14-yard TD and Ameer Williams scored on an 8-yarder to put the Dukes 14-0 in the second quarter. Solomon Hemingway’s 8-yard run got Burke back into the game.

At Goshen, Matt Giordano threw four first-half touchdown passes — including three to Jack Shannon — to lead the Gladiators in a big Class A, Division II game.

Giordano finished with 370 yards and five TDs. Shannon had 145 yards receiving.

Goshen is now 3-0 in the division and 4-1 overall. Wallkill fell to 1-2, 2-3.

The Gladiators went into halftime ahead 29-7. The Panthers tried to get closer, but Goshen grabbed all the

momentum with a goal-line stand.

Woodlands 42, Red Hook 6

At Hartsdale, Red Hook muffed the opening kickoff and Noe Fleurimond returned it for a touchdown to spark (4-1) Woodlands in a non-league game.

Kyle Adlam intercepted two passes and Shaka Davis picked off one to lead the Falcon defense.

The loss dropped Red Hook to 2-3 on the year.
