A 90-year-old Kingston man was injured Thursday morning when the car he was driving on Delaware Avenue, in the area of Hasbrouck Avenue, went off the road and over the edge of an abandoned railroad tunnel, landing on an old rail bed below. A 90-yearold Kingston man was injured Thursday morning when the car he was driving went off a road and over the edge of an abandoned railroad tunnel, landing on the old rail bed below, according to city police.

The crash occurred about 9:17 a.m. on Delaware Avenue at Hasbrouck Avenue, the Kingston Police Department said.

Police said Robert Gorsline of Kingston was headed northeast on Delaware Avenue when the 2009 Chevrolet Impala he was driving struck the rear of a 2008 Dodge Durango being driven by Florence Schoonmaker, 38, of Kingston. Schoonmaker was stopped at a stop sign on Delaware Avenue at Hasbrouck Avenue and Livingston Street, police said.

After the collision, Gorsline’s vehicle continued through the intersection, left the road and went over the edge of the rail tunnel, police said. They said the car plunged to the rail bed below and was found nose down with the roof leaning against the tunnel wall in an unstable position. Gorsline still was in the car, and emergency responders communicated with him while trying to stabilize the vehicle, police said.

Police said firefighters were able to get into the car and remove Gorsline, who had been suspended by his seat belt. Once clear of the car, Gorsline was treated by medical personnel for neck and back injuries before being taken to MidHudson Regional Hospital in Poughkeepsie for further treatment, police said.

Schoonmaker, the driver of the Durango, was not injured, police said.
