Ellenville 1, Dover 0

At Ellenville, Justin Guiliano’s goal made the difference as the Devils defeated the Dragons in a preview of sectional play.

“This was a nice win for us,” Ellenville Coach Maxwell Mead said. “We know that Dover is poised to win MHAL Division four and be seeded high in sectionals, so we wanted to challenge ourselves today.”

After 55 minutes of scoreless soccer in a contest with a lot of pushing and late fouls, the Devils pressured the ball and Ferenthil got fouled by a Dragon’s defender within the box. Guiliano was then able to kick the ensuing corner past Dover keeper Chris Caracundo for the deciding goal.

“We came out really flat today and almost gave up and early game,” Mead said. “After about 2025 minutes, I felt like we started to control the game.

“They were dangerous on the counterattack. So long as we dealt with that, I knew we would be just fine.”

The Devils (9-3, 7-3) had a few chances, late but the (6-2) Dragons central defenders pushed Ellenville wide and blocked most threats.

Ellenville held an 11-9 edge in shots and dominated 7-1 in corners.

Christian Stinehour recorded seven saves for the Devils, while Caracundo finished with three for Dover.
