CHICHESTER >> George W. Sweet, 87, of Rt. 214 died Monday, Oct. 15, 2018, at the Mountainsi­de Care Center in Margaretvi­lle.

A native and life long resident, he was born in Shandaken on April 3, 1931; son of the late George and Daisy Ward Sweet. He was a heavy equipment operator for the NYS DOT for 25 years. George enjoyed camping and country music. He was dedicated to his family. George was a caretaker for properties, did lawn care and landscapin­g, and had a skill for tinkering with small equipment. He loved to help people, and was always lending a hand. He had been a life member of the MF Whitney Hose Co.

Surviving are his wife, Eleanor Ostrander Sweet; son, Joseph (Veronica), daughters: Peggy (Blair) Benjamin, Karen (Carl) Benjamin, Carol (Edwin) Benjamin; sister, Eva Quick; brother, John Sweet; nine grandchild­ren, eight great-grandchild­ren, and four greatgreat-grandchild­ren.

He was predecease­d by his granddaugh­ter, Diane Benjamin, and siblings: Rita, Thelma, and Charlie.

A Service to Celebrate the Life of George will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the E. B. Gormley Funeral Home, 87 Main St., Phoenicia. Burial in the Shandaken Rural Cemetery. Friends will be received on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the E. B. Gormley Funeral Home.
