Freeman, DelSalto, Jaros going to states

Kingston High’s Lila Shih Freeman and Marlboro’s doubles team of Sammy Jaros and Ava DelSalto head to the state tourney.

Kingston High’s Lila Shih Freeman and Marlboro’s doubles team of Sammy Jaros and Ava DelSalto are one win away from a trip to the state girls tennis tournament after reaching Friday’s semifinals of the Section 9 tournament.

Freeman, who reached states last year, will face Washingtonville’s Jalynn Balleste in the morning semifinals. Balleste is 5-0 against Freeman, including a victory in last week’s Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association semis.

The Kingston freshman defeated Highland’s Allie Fuller 6-0, 6-0 and downed Cornwall’s Marina Blumenschein 6-3, 6-0 to advance to Friday’s action at the Match Point Tennis Complex.

“Lila played really well in the second match,” Kingston Coach Bill Constant said. “She was really outstanding.”

The top three will advance to the state tourney. Even if Freeman should lose in the semis, a win in the consolation finals earns her the trip.

“We need a real super effort tomorrow. If that doesn’t work, we’ve got the second match to fall back on,” Constant said.

Jaros and DelSalto, who won the Mid-Hudson League crown last week, scored a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Madelyn St. Amend and Angelika Rakwall of John S. Burke Catholic in the first round, then pulled a tough 7-6 (4), 7-5 victory over Newburgh’s Deeya Modhwadiya and Sadie McNair in the quarterfinals.

Walkill’s Emily Savage, the MHAL singles champ who was seeded second, was knocked off by Cornwall’s Shirali Patel 6-3, 6-1 in the opening round.
