WASHINGTONVILLE, N.Y. >> Freshman Ellie Meyer won the 100-yard breaststroke Saturday, leading Kingston High to a fifth place in the Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association Division 1 girls swimming and diving championships.

Meyer won the breaststroke in 1:12.64, defeating Pine Bush’s Mackenzie Gula by five-hundreths of a second. Monroe-Woodbury’s Kelsey O’Brien was less than a quarter of a second behind Meyer, who slashed 3.38 seconds off her time to meet the Section 9 standard. Meyer also swam a season-best 56.57 for eighth in the 100-freestyle, which also met the sectional cut.

“I took a chance of putting Ellie in the breast. She had only did it once this year. I had been looking for events to put her in for sectionals,” said Kingston coach Chris Sammons, who also had Meyer swimming anchor for the 200and 400-free relays.

Both teams posted season bests with Mackenzie Quinn, Isabella Amaro, Emily McCord and Meyer doing 1:44.47 in the 200 and 3:49.14 in the 400 for fifth and fourth place respectively.

Amaro was fourth in the backstroke with a 1:02.86 and that also met the sectional standard. Sabrina Browning was sixth in the diving held Thursday with a PR of 367.50 points.

Also meeting sectional standards were Mallory Sullivan and Alexa Peck in the 200-free, McCord in the 50-free, Amaro and McCord in the 100-free and Sullivan in the 500-free.

“To get the amount for quality swims today was great,” Sammons said.

Shadowing the Tigers were Rondout Valley’s Alexandra Kassian and Abigail Chrorzempa. Kassian qualified for sectionals with a 1:04.02 in the backstroke and a 1:09.53 in the breaststroke, while Chrorzempa made it with a 30.64 in the 50-free.
