Wozniacki gets 1st win at this year’s WTA Finals

Defending champion Caroline Wozniacki earned her first victory at this year’s WTA Finals, beating Petra Kvitova 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 on Tuesday.

Wozniacki, who became the first Danish woman to win a Grand Slam title at this year’s Australian Open, is now 1-1 in her group. Kvitova is 0-2.

Wozniacki lost to Karolina Pliskova in her opening match, while Kvitova lost to Elina Svitolina. Pliskova and Svitolina will meet later Tuesday.

Kvitova, who won the WTA Finals title in her debut appearance at the year-end tournament in 2011, was the one taking chances on Tuesday. But Wozniacki played steadier defense and waited for the Czech to make mistakes.

Kvitova finished the match with 40 winners and 40 unforced errors. Wozniacki had 19 winners and 14 unforced errors.

Alliance to hold 1st title game in Las Vegas

The Alliance of American Football will stage its championship game in Las Vegas.

The new eight-team league, which begins play on Feb. 9 — the weekend after the Super Bowl — will conclude with a Saturday night title match on April 27 on CBS. That game will be held at Sam Boyd Stadium, home to the Las Vegas Bowl and the UNLV football team.

Under a two-year deal, the 2020 championship will also be decided at that venue.

“Las Vegas has a proven track record of success hosting largescale sporting events, making it an ideal destination for our championship games,” said Charlie Ebersol, co-founder and CEO of the Alliance.

The Alliance, which will have a 10-game season, does not have a franchise in Las Vegas.

U.S. women’s national team defender Kelley O’Hara is expected to be out eight to 12 weeks after surgery on her right ankle.

U.S. Soccer says O’Hara had arthroscopic surgery Tuesday in Atlanta to remove “loose bodies” in the ankle.

She recently competed at the CONCACAF World Cup qualifying tournament. The U.S. won the event and secured a spot in the World Cup next summer in France.

O’Hara will miss the team’s final two games of the year in Scotland and Portugal next month.

O’Hara says in a statement: “This is just the best time to get the procedure done so I’m 100 percent heading into 2019 and physically ready to perform at the level I want to and need to. It’s a bummer that I won’t get to Europe, but the most important thing is to be healthy for next year.”
