‘Laura Kaufman: Drafter’ at Columbia-Greene Community College
An exhibition of sculptures and drawings, titled “Laura Kaufman: Drafter,” is currently on display at the Columbia-Greene Community College Foundation Gallery, 4400 state Route 23, Greenport.
The show features work from the artist’s studio practice in language and textiles. Kaufman is exhibiting sculptures of punctuation marks woven in industrial felt, and drawings of plaids — the forms of which are derived from scientific reporting. Using language and geometric abstraction, Kaufman builds and undermines existing systems of shapes, words and numbers.
Her works are made by joining, embroidering, weaving, folding and printing with materials that include felt, steel, linen and cotton. With references to landscape, minimalism and traditional textile crafts, Kaufman has invented new, blended relationships that hover between drawing and sculpture.
Kaufman is an artist and educator whose projects have been exhibited nationally, including at the University Art Museum, University of Albany; Biers Gallery at Columbus College of Art and Design, Columbus, Ohio; Field ProjectsGallery, New York, NY; the Bronx Museum of Art and many other venues. She received a master of fine arts degree in sculpture from the Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, R.I., and a bachelor of arts degree in studio art from Vassar Col-
lege in Poughkeepsie.
The exhibition will be on display until Wednesday, Nov. 21.
Gallery hours are Mondays to Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call (518) 828-4181, ext. 3241.
