Woodward leaves Dodgers, hired as Rangers manager

The Texas Rangers have hired Los Angeles Dodgers third base coach Chris Woodward as their manager, six weeks after Jeff Banister was fired.

The team said Saturday he received a three-year contract with a club option for 2022. He is to be introduced at news conference Monday.

The Rangers are coming off their first consecutive losing seasons since 2005-08.

The hiring ends a process during which general manager Jon Daniels and the Rangers interviewed more than 10 candidates, including bench coach Don Wakamatsu after he served as interim coach the final 10 games of the season.

Woodward was interviewed this week after the National League champion Dodgers finished their season in the World Series for the second straight year.

Biles wraps up remarkable worlds with 4th gold medal

Simone Biles is heading home with a fistful of gold medals.

The American star won the floor exercise at the world gymnastics championships Saturday and added a bronze on balance beam to wrap up a remarkable meet in which she competed while battling a kidney stone.

The Olympic champion won six medals in all at the Aspire Dome, including gold in the team final, the all-around and the vault to go with the bronze on beam as well as a silver medal on uneven bars.

Biles now has 20 career world championships medals, tied with Svetlana Khorkina of Russia for the most by a female gymnast.

Braves decline to make qualifying offers

The Braves did not extend a qualifying offer to any of their free agents, including cleanup hitter Nick Markakis.

If Atlanta had made $17.9 million, one-year offer to Markakis by Friday’s deadline, it would have been in line to receive a draft pick if he signed elsewhere. But the team opted against such a move, not wanting to give the outfielder — who turns 35 this month — the option of taking such a lucrative deal.

While Markakis was a firsttime All-Star who hit .297 with 14 homers and 93 RBIs, his production tailed off in the second half of the season.

The Braves also opted against qualifying offers to catcher Kurt Suzuki, starting pitcher Anibal Sanchez, starter Brandon McCarthy, infielder Ryan Flaherty and reliever Peter Moylan. McCarthy has said he plans to retire.
