KINGSTON, N.Y. >> Democrat Jen Metzger, a Rosendale town councilwom­an, defeated Ann G. Rabbitt, the Republican Orange County clerk, in Tuesday’s race to succeed retiring Republican John Bonacic in the state’s 42nd Senate District.

Metzger was outpolling Rabbitt 47,802 to 45,421, with 259 of 263 election districts reporting.

The 42nd Senate District includes parts of Delaware, Sullivan, Orange and Ulster counties. In Ulster County, the district includes the towns of Rosendale, New Paltz, Gardiner, Shawangunk, Wawarsing and Denning.

Metzger moved to Rosendale 17 years ago. For the past decade, she has served in various local government positions, including as chairwoman of the Rosendale Environmen­tal Commission for many years.

She currently is serving in her second term as a Rosendale Town Board member.

Rabbitt ran for and won her first public office as a trustee for the village of Greenwood Lake, where she served from 1999 to 2002. She served on the Warwick Town Board from 2002 to 2005.

Rabbitt was a member of the state Assembly from 2005 to 2013 and was elected Orange County clerk in 2013.

Bonacic, of Mount Hope, has been in the the state Senate for 20 years.
