Gauthier, Harris play Railway Museum

-

The Empire State Railway Museum, 70 Lower High St., Phoenicia, hosts a concert by Mary Gauthier on Saturday, Nov. 10, at 7:30 p.m.

Jaimee Harris will open the show and also accompany Gauthier on the latter’s set.

The Associated Press called Gauthier one of the best songwriters of her generation. “Drag Queens in Limousines,” off of Gauthier’s second CD of the same name, won best Folk/ Singer-Songwriter Song at theinaugural Independent Music Awards in 1999. Her third album, “Filth and Fire” in 2002, was named No. 1 Best Independent CD of the year by Jon Pareles of The New York Times. Her 2005 release, “Mercy Now” was ranked the sixthbest record of the decade by No Depression magazine. That same year, the Americana Music Association named Gauthier New Artist of the Year. “The Foundling,” which came out in 2010, was named No. 3 Record of the Year by The Los Angeles Times. In addition, her CD Trouble and Love was included in Rolling Stone’s feature “The 26 Albums of 2014 You Probably Didn’t But Really Should Hear.”

Gauthier’s songs have been recorded by Jimmy Buffett, Tim McGraw, Blake Shelton and Bettye LaVette. They’ve also appeared in several major TV shows, including “Nashville” on ABC, Masterpiece Theatre’s “Case Histories,” Showtime’s “Banshee” and HBO’s “Injustice.”

Very few can pen a song with the power that Gauthier captures. The L.A. Weekly once wrote, “Gauthier’s skill in balancing a profoundly personal tale with classic underpinnings ultimately hints at the evocative idea that all our lives are full of events that touch on the mythic and the timeless.” Nowhere is that more evident than in her latest work, “Rifles and Rosary Beads” (nominated for 2018 Album of the Year by The Americana Music Association.) All 11 of its songs were co-written by Gauthier with wounded veterans and/ or their life partners.

Harris was pegged by Melissa Clarke, publisher of American Highway, as one of the highlights of this year’s AmericanaFest, writing, “Mark my words, this musician with a debut album on the horizon is the one to watch. A depth of songwriting, strong guitar skills and an instinct for vocals and harmonies made Harris a standout.”

Admission is $25 or $23 with an RSVP to flyingcatmusic@gmail.com. Call (845) 688-9453 for more information.
