RIFTON >> David W. Borden, 66, passed away Monday, Nov. 19, 2018, at Northern Dutchess Hospital in Rhinebeck, N.Y., surrounded by the love of four generations of his family.

The eldest son of William Borden and Joan (Mathusa) Clark, Dave was born Oct. 27, 1952, in Niskayuna, N.Y. In addition to his parents, Dave is survived by his wife of 47 years, Susan (Mitchell) Borden; his daughters, Erin Luby and her husband Dan, and Amy Borden and her wife Charlene Boswell; his granddaughter, Claire Luby; his sister, Kim Nadeau; his brother, Keith Borden; his sister, Terri Vinson; and his uncle, Howard Borden and his wife Jeanne. Nieces, nephews, cousins, and innumerable friends also carry on his love. Dave was a friend to everyone, and all would agree that there is nothing in the world like a Dave hug.

Dave loved music and had attended countless shows over the years. He and Sue took Erin and Amy to their first concert at Radio City Musical Hall in 1984, and the family tradition of attending concerts together continued through dozens of Grateful Dead shows, and nearly 100 total concerts of varying popularity, in venues large and small. Dave was never without a song in his heart, and occasionally that feeling migrated to his feet. His mantra, much to Amy’s chagrin, was “sometimes you just gotta dance.” It would strike without warning, and he couldn’t resist.

An excellent diagnostician and a fixer by nature, Dave began his lifelong career as an appliance repairman at Scholar’s in Kingston, and eventually opened his own appliance repair business out of his home. Dave later joined the GE Appliance Repair Division, where he put many miles on his work van, blasting the Grateful Dead tunes, until his retirement.

Dave was not a formal guy and much preferred comfort over custom. He loved everyone for exactly who they are, without any need to be fancy. Please join us to celebrate his life by attending however you are most comfortable. Casual dress, work clothes, favorite shirts and jeans are all appropriate attire to celebrate a man who only owned ties because Jerry Garcia designed them.

Funeral arrangements are under the guidance of Joseph V. Leahy Funeral Home Inc., 27 Smith Ave., Kingston (www.jvleahyfh.com).

Memorial visitation will be held Monday, Nov. 26, 2018, from 4 to 7 p.m. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2018, at 10 a.m. at St. Peter’s Church in Rosendale. Inurnment in St. Peter’s Cemetery, Rosendale, immediately follows.

In lieu of flowers, Dave’s family encourages donations to be made in his honor to the Rifton Fire Department, P.O. Box 2, Rifton, N.Y. 12471, of which he was a proud member.
